Can Knives go in the dishwasher?

The answer to this is simple, absolutely not!!

Knives must never be put washed in the dishwasher, firstly and most obviously,  it could be dangerous, you might not necessarily be the one who unloads the dishwasher and the unsuspecting party who grabs the blade of a knife by mistake could have a nasty accident.

Secondly, knives can suffer serious damage in the dishwasher as a result of high temperatures and the acids in cleaning products. It probably goes without saying that one trip trough the dishy would be catastrophic to a carbon steel blade but did you also know that it is also likely to ruin stainless steel knives over time too? It can do terrible damage to glues and resin tasked with holding handles in place and that’s before we even get to the wood, oh the poor wood!

And finally the consistent high temperatures of dishwashers can also affect the heat treatment of knives which can in turn affect their strength and edge retention, so just pop your knives in the sink and give them a quick wash it doesn’t take very long.
